The Centre Hospitalier de Poissy et Saint-Germain-en-Laye has several ambulatory surgery units, as well as specialized general surgery departments.
Since 2023, the CARE cluster has been working on projects to improve patient care. For the Surgery group, the aim is to provide better pre-operative care for patients, using non-medical approaches to reduce pre-operative anxiety. They have obtained an initial grant from the regional health agency (RHA) to purchase equipment and create a snozelen-type relaxation room.
In a second phase, thanks to in-house training in aromatherapy (level 1 / 120 people), the surgery division set up a multidisciplinary Aroma COPIL to implement aromatherapy. Dr Anna Lallemand, anaesthetist, Sophie Ramos, health executive, Malika Dhaime, nurse, and Séverine Laurent, speech therapist, set up a new protocol to relieve perioperative anxiety by offering their patients sticks soaked in Sweet Orange or True Lavender.
The project is to evaluate the value of aromatherapy by comparing two groups of ambulatory surgery patients. They goal is to assess patient satisfaction via a surveys, measuring anxiety with the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS).
The project will compare the group who did not receive aromatherapy with those who did.
The grant will finance the purchase of equipment (inhalation sticks and essential oils) as well as new training for care team referents.
